A Sermon for Pentecost

Posted by Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on June 08, 2025

Peter Rollins, a Northern Irish writer and theologian known for his influence in Postmodern Christianity, once said, “We all have holes we want filled, but more times than not, God doesn’t just fill those holes, God makes them bigger.” Pastor James invites us to reflect on whether we have mischaracterized the Holy Spirit as simply the Comforter. While the Spirit does provide solace and reassurance, Pastor James explores how God, in alignment with Rollins’ perspective, works through the Spirit to guide Christians as they confront deeper struggles and challenges. He highlights Pentecost as both a testament to God’s continual presence and an invitation to recognize how God is working through us today, just as He did with Peter and the disciples.

Pentecost is celebrated fifty days after Easter and marks the event when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles. This pivotal moment ignited the beginning of the Church's mission, empowering the apostles to spread the teachings of Jesus Christ and marking the foundation of the Christian Church. Join us, as Pastor James discusses how Pentecost signifies not just a historical event, but the ongoing presence and influence of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers.
