Can You Handle the Good News?

Jesus’ command to sell possessions and give to the poor reveals a hard truth that challenges our priorities and anxieties, yet it is rooted in God’s generous promise. Our fears and reluctance to be generous often stem not from selfishness, but from deep-seated anxiety about survival and security. Today’s gospel message flips this logic: God’s kingdom is already ours—not earned by works but freely given out of divine pleasure. Only when we grasp this grace can we joyfully live generously and watchfully, not out of fear, but in hopeful anticipation of Christ’s return. Ultimately, the truth of today’s gospel text is not a burden to bear, but a gift meant to comfort and transform us.
