Home, Sweet Home

Posted by Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on March 01, 2026

Abraham begins as Abram in Ur but is called by God to leave his homeland and family to journey to an unknown promised land, requiring him to abandon the comfort and security he has built. Though he obeys at age 75 with his wife Sarah and nephew Lot, his journey is filled with trials including famine, deception in Egypt, and the long wait for an heir, yet God remains faithful to his covenant. The ultimate test comes when God asks Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac, demonstrating that true faith means being willing to surrender even what is most precious. Throughout Scripture, this pattern of faithful obedience repeats—Moses, Joshua, Ruth, Jeremiah, Mary, and the disciples all answer God's call to leave the familiar and enter unknown territory. The message is that blessing and spiritual growth come not from building secure earthly homes, but from trusting God's guidance into the unknown, knowing that God promises to accompany us every step of the way.
