If Only

Posted by Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on March 22, 2026

When Jesus learns that his beloved friend Lazarus has died, he deliberately delays his arrival to Bethany, declaring that this tragedy will ultimately glorify God and strengthen the faith of his disciples. Despite the danger of returning to Judea where the Jews had recently tried to stone him, Jesus sets out with his followers, cryptically telling them he will "awaken" his sleeping friend. Upon arriving four days after Lazarus's burial, Jesus encounters the grieving sisters Martha and Mary, who both express their anguish expressing “if only” Jesus’ presence could have prevented their brother's death. Jesus responds with one of his most profound declarations; "I am the resurrection and the life" and demonstrates this divine power by commanding the dead man to emerge from his tomb, fully alive and bound in burial cloths. This miraculous resurrection of Lazarus becomes a turning point, convincing many witnesses to believe in Jesus as the Son of God.
