Focus on Forgiveness

Join us today as Pastor James reflects on forgiveness as a central expression of Christian faith and grace. Based on today’s text, Matthew 18:21–35, the message acknowledges how difficult forgiveness can be when we have been deeply hurt. Peter asks Jesus how often he must forgive, hoping for a limit, but Jesus answers with “seventy times seven,” moving forgiveness beyond scorekeeping and into the mercy of the Gospel. Through the parable of the unforgiving servant, the sermon shows that forgiveness is not forgetting, excusing, or bargaining. True forgiveness names real harm, accepts responsibility, releases the desire to punish, and opens the way to a new beginning. The servant forgiven an impossible debt fails because he refuses to extend mercy to another. In the same way, Christians who have received God’s mercy through Christ are called to share that mercy with the heartfelt knowledge that forgiveness is not passive weakness, but Spirit-given freedom and strength. Forgiveness is a powerful witness to God’s grace because we forgive knowing Christ first forgave us through the cross.
