The Crux of the Cross

In today’s gospel, Matthew 16:21–28, Jesus calls His followers to deny themselves, take up the cross, and follow Him. Pastor James asserts that the cross must remain at the heart of the Christian faith because it reveals God’s sacrificial love, redemption, humility, service, and forgiveness. Pastor James goes on to explain that “losing life” for Christ doesn’t mean self-hatred or needless suffering, but surrendering self-centeredness, worldly ideas of success, and the desire for control. True life is found not in possessions, power, or status, but in relationship with God, love for others, trust, and sacrificial service.

Additionally, the message details three key marks of discipleship. First, denying oneself means removing the self from the center and giving God His rightful place. That follows with taking up the cross by choosing obedience to God, as Jesus did, when He prayed, “Not my will, but Thine be done.” Finally, following Jesus requires daily Christ-like commitment, remaining near to God and allowing Him to shape one’s life. Though discipleship is demanding, Christ’s cross gives believers the strength to bear their burdens, serve faithfully, and discover true life in Him.
